Filamentary Keratitis
Filamentary keratitis is a chronic disorder in which filaments which are adherent complexes of mucus and corneal epithelium are present on the corneal surface. Filamentary keratitis is a sight-threateni ng and a functional ly debilitating complicati on of a number of ocular and systemic conditions as already mentioned.

Filamentary keratitis. We hereby report five different cases of filamentary keratitis due to various ocular. Filamentary keratitis has several causes including dry eye. Filamentary keratitis is a severe ocular surface condition that is characterized by fine strands of degenerated epithelial cells with mucous attached to the cornea 1 Epithelial damage of the basement membrane causes elevated.
Filamentary keratitis is a chronic corneal condition characterized by multiple filaments attached to areas of compromised corneal epithelium. Filaments associated with keratoconjunctivitis sicca responded more slowly average response time four weeks. Filamentary keratitis FK is an ocular condition characterized by the development of filaments or threads on the anterior corneal surface.
Filaments are mucous strands of which one section is attached to the cornea and another section floats in the tear film. Filaments appear as small gelatinous strands on the anterior surface of the cornea and may differ in size shape composition and distribution. This condition was first described by Leber 34 in 1882 and has since been associated with various ocular and systemic conditions that affect the tear film and ocular surface most notably dry eye.
Filaments associated with acute or traumatic diseases of the cornea responded in all nine cases with rapid resolution of symptoms and signs usually within one week. Filamentary keratitis is most often a chronic corneal condition characterized by filaments attached at one or both ends to the cornea. Filamentary keratitis is commonly the result of aqueous deficient dry eye syndrome.
In filamentary keratitis the filaments are composed of degenerated epithelial cells and mucus. Filamentary keratitis can be a chronic recurrent and debilitating condition. The filaments can be quite extensive and may enmesh calcareous granules bacteria and dust particles.
Filaments consist of a variable combination of degenerated epithelial cells and mucous which are attached to the corneal surface at one end. In one of nine cases 11 the treatment failed. Patients with filamentary keratitis typically present with variable reports of ocular discomfort ranging from grittiness and mild foreign body sensation to pronounced pain.
Filamentary keratitis can also be induced andor exacerbated by chronic use of ocular andor systemic medications and alternate medications or additional measures to manage the tear film and ocular surface may be required in these cases. Patients often experience foreign body sensation grittiness discomfort photophobia blepharospasm and increased blinking. Filamentary keratitis describes a condition in which filaments which are adherent complexes of mucus and corneal epithelium are present on the corneal surface.
In severe cases the cornea may. Filamentary keratitis is an eye condition where cells of the cornea the outer most layer of the eye die and form filaments that attach to the surface of the eye. Initial Management of Filamentary Keratitis FK is characterized by limbal hyperemia possible pseudoptosis tearing photophobia and ocular pain ranging from moderate to severe Handbook of Ocular Disease Management 2002.
Causes vary but common causes are dry eye patching or ptosis drooping of the upper lid corneal transplantation certain infections or other less common conditionsTreatment depends on cause but filamentary keratitis can be difficult to treat. Filamentary keratitis is a painful condition in which small tags of epithelium hang off the corneal surface.
